Newport
Just south of Newport stand two of
Oregon’s beloved treasures. The
Yaquina Bay Lighthouse and the
Yaquina Head Lighthouse, both built in
the 1870’s, still stand proud and light
the way for the seafarers. The Yaquina
Bay Lighthouse is the only historic
wooden Oregon lighthouse still
standing. This lighthouse was returned
to a working lighthouse in 1996. The
Yaquina Head Lighthouse, Oregon’s
tallest lighthouse, was first lit in 1873.
The old oil lamp has been replaced by
modern technology, but the original
lens is still in place.
Waldport
The city was incorporated in 1911, and
though it remains a small town, the views
and recreation opportunities are big.
Beachcombers enjoy the sandy shores,
searching for nature’s treasures. Crab,
fish, hike, fly a kite, or ride your horse by
the waves of the Pacific. What was once
an old Indian burial ground, is now a
paradise for the nature lover. With an
average yearly temperature of 51
degrees, Waldport offers many
opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
